“In 1961, after Carroll
Shelby’s run as a driver had ended but prior to forming Shelby American, he
became a Goodyear tire distributor. He hired me to run his new driving school and
to help with the tire business. I hired a couple of guys who’d go out to tracks
on race weekends and setup a tent with tires, a mounting machine and balancer. It
was soon apparent that our guys looked like everyone else at the track. We
needed a way to standout but how do you create a t-shirt to advertise tires?
After some thought, I realized
the most unique part of a tire is the tread. Goodyear had just come out with
their new “blue streak” race tire. I taped some butcher block paper down on the
shop floor, carefully rolled some paint over the tread of a tire and then
rolled the tire over the paper leaving a perfect tire tread. I put together some
words and took the paper and the Goodyear logo down to the shirt shop and had
these shirts made. They recommended the collar be sewn on after the tire track
was printed on the back of the shirt so the tread wouldn’t bleed onto the
collar.” Peter Brock, Shelby American Director of Special Projects.
It’s all about the details
and OVC has made these shirts in the same, labor intensive manner. That also
includes that they are made with the same thin material as the original shirts.
Note: These t-shirts are not made from the same beefy-t material as the other
t-shirts we offer. With this shirt you get an original reproduction.
