The attempt to break the Land Speed Record is a perfect example of man's desire to achieve the unachievable. Although philosophies on how to do it differ, ingenuity is required. Peter Brock was able to follow Craig Breedlove's Spirit of America crew into the Blackrock Desert for their attempt in 1997. While there, Brock was also able to capture the British attempt in a vehicle they called the Thrust. While Craig did not break the record that year, the Brits did. In a desire to bring the record back to the US, Steve Fosset purchased Breedlove's Spirit of America ship in 2007. Fosset was flying across the desert in September, 2007 looking for potential practice sites when he disappeared. The wreckage of his plane was found in 2008. Craig Breedlove was still dreaming of making another attempt, with a pilot other than himself, in a new land speed record machine of his design when he passed away of natural causes at the age of 86 on April 4, 2023. Every phase of breaking the record is a very dangerous pursuit yet Brock captured the differing philosophies and the inherit beauty in the attempts made in this by-gone era like no one else could.
