"Back in California in '67 I had the pleasure of working with Emil Diedt, one of the greatest alloy men in race car history. The BRE Hino Samurai was one of Emil's last projects; he must have been 80 when we built it over at Troutman and Barnes' shop in Culver City. It doesn't get much better than working with the best. I'm particularly proud of the Samurai because it was built by Emil, Dick and Tom. I started with a Le Grand Mk IV sports-racer chassis and we built from there. Unfortunately the President of Hino Motors died suddenly which ended the project rather abruptly. I never got to fully develop the car but did take it to Fuji Speedway for the Japan GP, which was an adventure in itself!"
