"Innovative Design of the DeTomaso P70, 1964"

"One of the most exciting things about designing new race cars back in the '60s was being able to build them on the shop floor with talented artisans who were challenged by the ideas. There were no computers then and you had to figure it all out as you went. This particular sports racer, the P70, started out as a concept between the Texan, Carroll Shelby and the Argentinean, Alejandro DeTomaso. It was built in a tiny back street shop in Modena, Italy by the artisans of Medardo Fantuzzi. Barely visible on this car due to its seamless integration with the body was Brock's concept of having the windscreen be part of the shape of the car. Also note the movable rear wing Brock implemented as part of the design, one of the first such devices ever used on a race car. Because DeTomaso never completed the special engine he'd promised Shelby the deal went south and the car never came to the US. The car was recently documented in a book on De Tomaso cars as being the car that gave De Tomaso the credibility that took him to the next step in the automotive industry."
